3 Big DON'Ts when trying to build backlinks

When playing the board game Monopoly the one place you don’t want to land is the go to jail spot. When creating backlinks there are some places you absolutely want to stay away from. I’m going to share with you 3 Big DO NOTS when trying to drive traffic to your site.

Tip 1: Bad Neighbors – You don’t want them!

On the Internet a bad neighbor is someone with questionable behavior or reputation that has a link to your site. Check out the site closely before adding your URL to their site when adding backlinks. You can use Google to give you a clue if the site you are backlinking with is reputable. In Google’s search box type “site:siteX.com”, where “siteX.com” is the site you are performing a check about. If you don’t get any results back then it would be wise not to link with that site

Tip 2: Don’t get caught Stuffing Keywords.

Keyword stuffing is where you duplicate content or the content you have lacks original content, has hidden links or text, uses doorway pages, has deceptive titles, uses machine generated pages, or violates copyright laws. Search engines such as Yahoo and Google tend to really disapprove keyword stuffing. A good rule of thumb is to just be honest in your dealings with your fellow men. Hmmm, where have I heard that before?

Tip 3: Avoid Link Exchanges

Avoid using link exchange practices. Link exchanges are when you link to a site and in return they want to backlink with your site. Having inbound links are ok but having a lot more outbound links than what you have inbound links for is NOT GOOD. If you link to a link farm that could mean that the number of outbound links on you site could greatly outnumber your inbound links and you could be banned from search engines. This would be bad because it’s very important to have a strong rating with the search engines so traffic can be driven to your site.

My intent for sharing these tips was not to scare you off or discourage you from using backlinks. My objective is to simply help you avoid trouble so you don’t get banned.
